Advanced Doula Trainings
Advanced Doula Training: Perinatal Grief and Loss
Logistics:
- January 8th from 11:00am to 4:00pm (PST)
- Zoom class - join from anywhere!
What will we be covering?
- We will be addressing "Grief and Loss" and how it affects a pregnancy or arrival of a child. Not specifically the death of a baby, we will expand outward into the larger experience of grief and how that can shadow the plans around a birth. How might grief show up in a pregnancy? Will past losses in the life of the birthing family affect this transition into parenthood?
- We will then explore pregnancy loss in all it's forms. Planned terminations at varying gestations, unexpected stillbirth and infant loss.
- How can we as birth team members support our clients as they walk this path? What can the path of grief look like? How do we build a support network?
- The Doula's need for self-care when working with grieving parents
We will be hearing from 3 mothers who experienced grief and loss in their perinatal time.
- Shannon - Sharing the journey of her elective termination of baby Hazel at 17 weeks
- Kelsey - Sharing her story of the loss of Bea, one of her triplets at 20 weeks
- Sean - Sharing her struggle with the unexpected term stillbirth of her son, Sam
"This sounds too hard, I don't know if I want to do grief work..."
The reality of birth work is that you cannot avoid grief. We as doulas are beside birthing families as they stand at the veil between life and death. Unexpected stillbirth can happen at any birth, and tragic outcomes are sometimes unavoidable. Grief is everywhere in life anyways, and some of your clients will have lost their own parents, spouses or loved ones prior to or during their pregnancy and that grief can influence how their parental identity is shaped. Being prepared is the best way to support your clients!

Remember that my training space is a judgement-free zone. My classroom space (in person and virtually) will always be a space that is gender inclusive, anti-racist, pro-LGTBQIA+ and welcoming of all family structures and faiths. During the Grief & Loss classes, people may express views that differ to yours, especially regarding pregnancy termination and we strive to allow space for that. You will not be asked or directed to support any client who's choice goes against your beliefs, nor will you be shamed for opting in or out of the role of a Full Spectrum Doula. If one class participant directly offends another, there will be one warning given and if it's repeated, that participant will be removed from the classroom.
