All trainings and classes run and hosted by Let It Be Birth are inclusive trainings that foster a space of anti-racism and inclusivity with all birthing genders. Failure to participate respectfully in this space and you will be asked to leave and no refund is given.
This is an additional "advanced doula training" that is sometimes offered in conjunction with the Birth Doula Skills workshop. Attending this class will enroll you in the online classroom for Grief and Loss doulas and you can move forward towards your extra certification in bereavement work at your own pace.
What are the logistics of this training?
What will we be covering?
This sounds too hard, I don't know if I want to do grief work...
The reality of birth work is that you cannot avoid grief. We as doulas are beside birthing families as they stand at the veil between life and death. Unexpected stillbirth can happen at any birth, and tragic outcomes are sometimes unavoidable. Grief is everywhere in life anyways, and some of your clients will have lost their own parents, spouses or loved ones prior to or during their pregnancy and that grief can influence how their parental identity is shaped. Being prepared is the best way to support your clients!
- Class fee is $275
- Scholarships are available for doulas who identify as and/or work with marginalized populations. The fee for these spaces is $100.
What will we be covering?
- We will be addressing "Grief and Loss" and how it affects a pregnancy or arrival of a child. Not specifically the death of a baby, we will expand outward into the larger experience of grief and how that can shadow the plans around a birth. How might grief show up in a pregnancy? Will past losses in the life of the birthing family affect this transition into parenthood?
- We will then explore pregnancy loss in all it's forms. Planned terminations at varying gestations, unexpected stillbirth and infant loss.
- How can we as birth team members support our clients as they walk this path? What can the path of grief look like? How do we build a support network?
- The Doula's need for self-care when working with grieving parents
- The Zoom classes will also include time in a smaller breakout room where a few students are paired up with one of our panelists of loss parents to practice birth story processing.
- NEW for 2021: Grief and Loss in a Pandemic

Class Participation Agreement:
Remember that this zoom space is a judgement-free zone. My classroom space (in person and virtually) will always be a space that is anti-racism, pro-LGTBQIA+ and welcoming of all family structures and faiths. During the Grief & Loss classes, people may express views that differ to yours, especially regarding pregnancy termination and we strive to allow space for that. You will not be asked or directed to support any client who's choice goes against your beliefs, nor will you be shamed for opting in or out of the role of a Full Spectrum Doula. If one class participant directly offends another, there will be one warning given and if it's repeated, that participant will be removed from the classroom.
